NewsRV Thuwal II, the latest research vessel of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, will be built in Spain's Freire Shipyard, the university said on Thursday. The ship will be developed in Freire's shipyard in Vigo, Spain, which has over a century of expertise in shipbuilding.
According to a release from KAUST, RV Thuwal II will be Saudi Arabia's first regional class research vessel when it is finished in 2026, providing total access to the Red Sea, encompassing coastal and deepwater areas.
As the flagship of Saudi Arabia's research vessel fleet, RV Thuwal II will be able to support all of the country's maritime research needs, including those of government departments and gigaprojects.
By investigating coral reefs and other interesting locations, the ship will further Saudi research and draw in new foreign collaborators.
RV Thuwal II will have a draft of 3.6 meters and dimensions of 50 meters by 12.8 meters. Because of its modular design, it can include a variety of experimental laboratories for Red Sea exploration that will support both current and emerging marine technologies.
In order to cut carbon emissions, the ship can also use new environmentally friendly propulsion systems.
RV Thuwal II may assist with national responses to catastrophes such as oil spills and maritime and aviation mishaps in the Red Sea, in addition to its primary role as a research vessel.
RV Thuwal II can accommodate 30 passengers, 12 of whom will be crew members.
Several Saudi colleges with expertise in marine operations and ocean research, giga-projects, and ministries have been involved in the planning of RV Thuwal II.
