NewsIn keeping with the aspirational Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), the purpose of this day is to raise awareness and motivate action throughout the Kingdom in the direction of a more sustainable future. The first-ever Saudi Green Initiative Day, with the theme "For Our Today and Their Tomorrow: KSA Together for a Greener Future," seeks to galvanize group activities from all spheres of society.
By encouraging people to express their commitments for a greener Saudi Arabia on social media with the hashtag #ForAGreenerSaudi, it motivates locals and citizens to get involved in sustainability initiatives.
On the SGI website, an information pack with a "pledge postcard" is provided to help participants understand how they may effectively contribute to the country's sustainability goals.
Over 80 programs from the public and commercial sectors are highlighted during the first Saudi Green Initiative Day event, totaling more than SR705 billion in green economy investments.
These efforts, which are in line with Vision 2030's goals to improve quality of life and foster economic possibilities in developing industries, are essential to Saudi Arabia's green transition.
Furthermore, the SGI's initiatives have made a substantial difference in biodiversity preservation, environmental restoration, and the fight against dust storms and desertification.
The addition of 2.8 GW of renewable energy to the national grid, which is enough to power over 520,000 homes, is one of the day's major accomplishments. Additional projects are being developed and built with the goal of greatly increasing this capacity.
This development contributes to Saudi Arabia's objective of obtaining 50% of its electricity generation capacity from renewable sources by 2030. In addition, the restoration of 94,000 hectares of damaged land and the planting of over 49 million trees and bushes represent significant advancements toward the objective of planting 10 billion trees throughout the Kingdom.
After considerable research and consultation with international experts, a comprehensive road map for sustainable afforestation was launched during the MENA Climate Week in Riyadh in October 2023.
The expansion of Saudi Arabia's protected zones, which currently include 6.49% of the country's maritime environment and 18.1% of its land. Rewilding over 1,660 animals and the birth of seven Arabian leopard pups under a conservation breeding program in Taif are examples of the notable success stories of rewilding endangered species.
The Saudi Green Initiative is a comprehensive framework that was introduced on March 27, 2021, by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman to unify and improve the Kingdom's sustainability initiatives.
