Master plan for the new Abha International Airport launched; the airport's capacity will increase tenfold to accommodate over 13 million passengers annually

The introduction of the master plan for the new Abha International Airport was announced on Thursday by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, who also serves as the chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs. With the extension, the airport's present 1.5 million passenger capacity would more than tenfold to accommodate over 13 million people annually. According to the Saudi Press Agency, it will also manage over 90,000 flights annually, a considerable rise from the existing 30,000 flights.

It is anticipated that the new airport in Abha will help the Asir area become a more well-known and desirable travel destination. Through improved air connection to 250 locations and the transportation of 330 million people, it will also meet Asir's development goal and the aviation strategy that is in line with Saudi Vision 2030. In order to become a well-known landmark in the Kingdom, the new airport seeks to reflect a cohesive architectural character with the legacy of the southern Asir area. By 2028, the expansion's first phase is expected to be finished.

Compared to the current airport's 10,500 square metres, the terminal space will increase to 65,000 square metres. Bridges for passenger boarding, self-service stations for expedited travel processes, and large parking lots are all part of this development. The new airport will also include twenty gates and forty-one check-in counters, including seven new self-service check-in locations. The new airport's design will highlight Saudi culture and represent the Asir region's architectural uniqueness. This design will provide a unique and highly efficient travel experience, guaranteeing smooth services for guests and travellers.
