Riyadh named as the Arab Environment Capital in recognition of its pioneering efforts in environmental preservation

Due to Riyadh's innovative efforts in environmental sustainability and preservation, the Saudi capital has been recognised as the "Arab Environment Capital" for the last two years. The Council of Arab Environment Ministers, at its 35th session, made the decision. Saudi Arabia presided over the meeting, which came to an end in Jeddah on Thursday.

Riyadh will be the site of a plethora of events and campaigns aimed at increasing environmental awareness, promoting sustainability, and coordinating efforts and projects meant to enhance both the environment and quality of life as the city prepares for its two-year term as the Arab Environment Capital. In keeping with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objectives, it is anticipated that these initiatives will enhance Riyadh's reputation as a worldwide centre for environmental action and sustainable growth.

Furthermore emphasising the Kingdom's leadership in implementing strategic and long-term environmental initiatives, the Saudi Green Initiative was presented with the Distinguished Environmental Project Award at the session's government sector level. 

A number of significant environmental events, including the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), will take place in Riyadh in 2024. Important topics include expanding the convention's work, the 2018–2030 Strategic Framework, and addressing concerns with dust storms and drought will be covered during this conference.

This is a major event on the Arab and international stages, with representatives from 196 parties as well as international and regional organisations anticipated to take part in the discussions.
