Saudi Arabia builds first road with recycled construction waste in Al-Ahsa

RIYADH: The Roads General Authority has completed the Kingdom's first-ever road constructed using recycled construction and demolition waste, according to the Saudi Press Agency on Saturday.

This project, a joint effort with Al-Ahsa municipality and the National Center for Waste Management, involved incorporating waste materials into the asphalt layers of a road in the Al-Ahsa governorate. The initiative followed research conducted by the authority to evaluate the performance of asphalt and gravel layers made from aggregates sourced from the municipality’s environmental landfill.

The use of recycled materials in infrastructure projects supports Saudi Arabia’s goal of moving toward a circular economy. The Kingdom aims to achieve a 60 percent recycling rate for construction waste by 2035, reflecting its dedication to environmental sustainability and efficient infrastructure development, as noted by the SPA.
