Second trial of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus was launched in Makkah

The second experiment of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus has been started by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites in cooperation with the General Department of Traffic, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, the Transport General Authority, and the Ministry of Energy.

The commission and the ministry of energy signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a hydrogen fuel cell bus trial project on specific routes, which includes this program. The experiment's objectives are to investigate the use of hydrogen in transportation, acquire technical and commercial know-how, and collect data for possible future growth. Additionally, it aims to increase public knowledge of hydrogen technology.

The commission hopes to improve quality of life and implement renewable energy-based transportation options through this effort, which is in line with Vision 2030's goals to lower emissions and safeguard the environment. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance the services offered to Umrah performers and pilgrims, improving their entire experience at the sacred locations.

The Makkah Bus Project incorporates the hydrogen bus trial, and a specific operating plan guarantees safety and security protocols. Using a mobile hydrogen fuelling station and running buses along the approved route are two examples of this.

The trial is being carried out in collaboration with the operating companies and pertinent government agencies. In order to guarantee that Makkah's public transportation system develops into a more sustainable service, the evaluation will concentrate on efficiency, performance, operational sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and passenger comfort.
