Taif, which is known for its rich cultural legacy and is the location of the iconic Souk Okaz, became a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) on World Cities Day. Taif was among the 54 cities recognised by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay for their dedication to using culture and creativity to promote urban development and resilience.
Taif, which is particularly recognised for its literary achievements, becomes a part of the network together with other cities from all over the world. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's only one-of-a-kind tourist destination, Souk Okaz, is located near Taif, tucked away in the highlands. With its historical significance, the Souk is situated as it once was and provides a window into the depths of the ancient Arab civilization. It draws a large number of visitors who are excited to experience its cultural diversity and discover its ancient beauty.
Because Souk Okaz was the original centre of Arabic civilization, its historical significance is extremely significant. It served as a gathering place for Arab scholars, poets, and readers of literature and culture in the past. Nowadays, the city of Souk Okaz hosts a number of talks, seminars, and events that provide tourists with a singular cultural experience. These events revive the illustrious history of the Arab world while emphasising the true legacy qualities of the Al-Mo'alagat (The Seven Golden Odes). Every rendition of Souk Okaz honours a poet from the Al-Mo'alagat, highlighting the vital role that culture plays in linking the past and present.
The Souk invites residents and visitors alike to have a unique cultural experience, serving as a living tribute to the region's rich literary and cultural heritage. Taif will continue to share its cultural assets with the world as it begins its new chapter as a UNESCO Creative City, embracing international collaboration and honouring the distinctive legacy that makes it stand out on the global scene.
The city is excited to take part in the 2024 UCCN Annual Conference in Braga, Portugal, where it will collaborate with other Creative Cities to investigate ways to include youngsters in discussions over the next ten years. Taif's membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is in line with the city's commitment to promoting artistic expression and innovation.
Taif is prepared to cooperate with other network members to contribute to the global conversation on urban resilience and sustainable development because of its historical sites and thriving cultural scene.
