NewsThe fourth ship of the Sarawat project, "His Majesty's Ship Jazan," had its debut on Monday at King Faisal Naval Base in Jeddah under the Western Fleet, with honours from Saudi Minister of Defence Prince Khalid bin Salman. Under the Sarawat project, it is the first ship to finish building its systems and conduct acceptance trials in Saudi Arabian land and waters.
The Chief of Staff of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF), Lt. Gen. Fahd Al-Ghufaili, and the Chief of Staff of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Fayyad Al-Ruwaili, greeted Prince Khalid upon his arrival at King Faisal Naval Base.
During the event, the minister was greeted by Lt. Gen. Al-Ghufaili. According to him, the new ship would safeguard the Kingdom's key strategic interests, improve maritime security in the area, and raise the preparedness of the Saudi naval forces. He also emphasised the unrestricted support that the Supreme Commander of all military forces, King Salman, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman provide to the armed forces in general and the naval forces in particular.
Lt. Gen. Al-Ghufaili said that in an authentic and practical representation of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, the defensive capabilities of the ship "His Majesty's Ship Jazan" were localised, and acceptance tests for its systems were carried out entirely on Saudi lands and waters, including live firing tests for various air and surface targets. The Sarawat project's ships are the most advanced of their kind worldwide, and they are outfitted with the first Saudi combat management system, known as "Hazm," which was created by Saudi experts.
Prince Khalid bin Salman entered the flight deck of the ship, following his speech, hoisted the Kingdom's flag, and officially welcomed it into the naval fleet. The ship's radars, whistles, and the whistles of nearby ships all started to sound, signalling the ship's official launch as the fourth vessel in the "Sarawat project."
Following his tour of the command tower, the minister signed a note in the ship's history file and had a group photo taken with the crew. Lt. Gen. Al-Ghufaili gave Prince Khalid a memento on this special occasion after the ceremony.
Several high-ranking Saudi civilian and military officials were present at the inauguration ceremony, including Eng. Walid bin Abdulmajeed Abu Khaled, CEO of Sami Company, Director General of the Office of the Minister of Defence Hisham bin Abdulaziz bin Saif, and Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Hussein Al-Biyari.
Alvaro Lobo, the commercial and business director of Saudi Navantia Company for the MENA and Asia region, Jorge Hevia Sierra, ambassador of Spain to Saudi Arabia, Admiral D. Gonzalo Sanz Alisedo, chief of naval personnel, and a number of other civilian and military officials were also present from the Spanish side. Xiana Mendez is the secretary of state for trade at the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism.
The combat management system known as "HAZEM packets," which was created by Saudis and an integrated work team as part of the "Sami Navantia" company's purpose inside the "Avante 2200" project, will be installed on all ships in the Sarawat project. As part of the Sarawat project, the Spanish state-owned firm Navantia built five Avante 2200 corvettes, of which HMS Jazan is the fourth. The first three ships, HMS Al-Jubail, Diriya, and Hail, were put into service earlier.
