The Saudi Green Initiative celebrates World Environment Day through the launch of programs to reduce plastic waste and clean the oceans

On June 5, the Saudi Green Initiative will begin programmes to cut down on plastic waste and clean up the waters in honour of World Environment Day. The UN has designated 2023 as World Environment Day, and the theme is "#BeatPlasticPollution," which will highlight strategies for reducing the pollution caused by plastic trash.

Only 9% of the 400 million tonnes of plastic garbage that are generated each year are recycled globally. The Saudi Basic Industries Corp. has joined the Coalition to Eliminate Plastic Waste in an effort to enhance waste management and remove plastic from the oceans. To improve the Kingdom's leadership in circular economy practises, SGI is working with the National Centre for Waste Management to produce a comprehensive national strategy for waste management in the country. 2025 is the projected completion date for the project.

The Saudi Investment Recycling Co. is in charge of a waste management initiative in the city of Riyadh that will divert 94% of the city's waste from landfills and turn over 1.3 million tonnes of biodegradable waste into agricultural fertilisers. This initiative is also carried out in collaboration with the National Centre for Waste Management.

The ultimate objective is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.1 million tonnes yearly and to create a successful waste management strategy that can be applied throughout the Kingdom by 2035. 77 distinct programmes totaling more than $186 billion have been invested in the green economy since the inception of SGI in 2021. The three concrete goals of the programmes are to decrease emissions, enhance vegetation, and safeguard regional biodiversity and landscapes.

SGI will launch a continuing campaign in June to increase public awareness of the Kingdom's environmental conservation activities.
