Next week marks the start of the third European Film Festival, which is being held for the first time in Riyadh and Jeddah. The European Union Delegation to the Kingdom, together with the embassies of EU member states and Arabia Pictures, is launching the event, which takes place from May 29 to June 6. It will take place in the recently opened VOX Cinemas Jeddah Park in Jeddah as well as VOX Cinemas Century Corner in Riyadh.
With twenty-one European films from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, this year's festival is larger than it has ever been.
The lineup includes films that have taken home accolades such as the Palme d'Or, the top honor given out at the Cannes Film Festival, and Oscars.
In addition to fostering links between European and Saudi filmmakers, the festival aims to promote European cinema and facilitate cultural interaction.
Oscar-winning Austrian filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky will be among the attendees and will present a unique masterclass.
Along with Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney from Cyprus, the Netherlands, and Ireland, respectively, director Kyriakos Tofaridis and screenwriter/director Mijke de Jong will also be present. They will interact with the public and hold an open discussion with filmmakers and cinema aficionados.
The free side events will all be held at VOX Cinemas Century Corner in Riyadh.
