With the installation of 250 motorized umbrellas in the mosque's courtyards, worshippers and guests at the Prophet's Mosque can now stay cooler. The big umbrellas, which are meant to chill and shade, work automatically, allowing guests to pray more comfortably.
Over 228,000 people are covered by the umbrellas in the mosque's outdoor prayer spaces. Two overlapping portions that smoothly line when closed make up each structure. The umbrellas are 22 meters tall and 25.5 meters by 25.5 meters in size. They are made to resist Madinah's weather while complementing the mosque's architectural architecture.
The arms of each umbrella are made of carbon fiber reinforced with glass and adorned with elaborate mosaic designs. They weigh over 40 tons apiece and have 436 misting fans to help keep the air cool, despite their fragile appearance. To ensure visibility at night, the umbrellas are additionally equipped with almost 1,000 lighting components.
The installation greatly increases the area available for covered prayer, with each umbrella's surrounding area able to accommodate over 900 attendees. The initiative is a component of continuous endeavors to enhance the comfort of worshippers and tourists at one of Islam's most sacred locations, all year long.
