With more than 1.6 million seats, the Haramain High Speed Railway is running more than 3,400 journeys during the holy month of Ramadan to handle the spike in Umrah pilgrims and tourists. In addition to Jeddah, the train service has greatly reduced traffic on the roads and satisfied the increasing demand for travel between the holy towns of Makkah and Madinah.
The Haramain High Speed Railway is one of the fastest electric railways in the world and a pillar of Saudi Arabia's railway network expansion with its 300 km/h speed and sophisticated signaling and communication systems. This significant Middle Eastern railway project was opened in 2018 with the goal of offering pilgrims, tourists, and travelers who are performing the Hajj and Umrah safe and effective transportation.
A thorough plan has been created by Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and the operating business to handle the additional traffic during Ramadan. It takes about two hours and twenty minutes to go by train from Makkah to Madinah.
There are five stations along the railway route in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah. The largest airport-connected railway station in the world, King Abdulaziz Airport station, streamlines passenger flow with six train platforms and an area of more than 105,000 square metres. By offering direct rail connectivity to other locations, this station eases traffic on the airport's roads.
