NewsAs the head of the Al Madinah Region Development Authority (MDA), Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the emir of Madinah, officially opened the electric bus service, one of the more recent examples of environmentally friendly public transportation that serves both locals and visitors to the Prophet's Mosque.
The Saudi Public Transport Company's CEO, Eng. Khalid Abdullah Al-Hogail, the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Transport General Authority (TGA), Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, all attended the event.
One of the TGA's initiatives is the electric bus, which is being carried out in collaboration with MDA and the local government. It is a continuation of the experiments the TGA is conducting to implement and activate cutting-edge transportation technology that is environmentally friendly.
Due to its great operational efficiency, the electric bus can travel 250 kilometres on a single charge when using a designated track. The chain route will travel the 38 km between the Prophet's Mosque and Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport. The service is expected to run more than 16 journeys per day for a total of 18 hours.
The electric bus has a cutting-edge air conditioning system, screens that show route information, and special seats for people with disabilities.
Since the service network will connect the north and south of the city, as well as the east and west of the town, passing by the Prophet's Mosque, new electric buses will be added to the Madinah Buses fleet, which is overseen by MDA, to improve the service provided to the residents and visitors of Madinah.
The introduction of the electric bus is in line with the goals of the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics, which seeks to adopt contemporary techniques and innovations in transportation-related activities and services while attempting to reduce carbon emissions by 25%.
The Strategy also aims to increase the use of public transportation in the Kingdom to 15% by 2030 and use eco-friendly means of transportation to improve quality of life in major cities.
