Green Riyadh Program implements water network projects with a total length of 1,350 km to irrigate 7.5 million trees in Riyadh

The Green Riyadh Programme builds 1,350 km of water network improvements in the Saudi capital to irrigate 7.5 million trees. Water network improvements will carry 1.7 million cubic metres of treated water per day, increasing irrigation use by 100%. This is done with the goal of establishing sustainable irrigation of green spaces for Green Riyadh programmes as well as municipal development projects.

Green Riyadh revealed that the primary network widths range from 1.2 to 2.4 metres, indicating that there are other sub-networks that connect all Riyadh neighbourhoods. In terms of implementation, the project has been carried out in accordance with the most recent technology and practices in order to expedite the process while ensuring that traffic movement in Riyadh is not disrupted.

Green Riyadh also relies on irrigation technology that uses a control and monitoring system to regulate irrigation water remotely. This is due to it being one of the key facilitators of the program's goals, which are founded on the idea of sustainability in irrigation utilising 100% treated water, confirming the program's commitment to profit from renewable resources.

A technical team comprised of government agencies and the commercial sector was created to expedite coordination efforts, overcome obstacles, and handle the problem associated with the deployment of irrigation water networks. The team was also created to integrate the programmes and plans with competent authorities in the implementation of public facilities, which were developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA), the Saudi Irrigation Organisation, and the National Water Company.

Water irrigation networks will be employed in numerous key Riyadh projects, including the Public Investment Funds (PIF) projects, the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), King Salman Park, Sports Boulevard, and the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project.

It is worth noting that the Green Riyadh project is one of four major initiatives initiated by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, as part of an initiative led by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman.

Green Riyadh seeks to plant more than 7.5 million trees around the Saudi capital, increase vegetation cover to 9.1% of the city's size, and increase per capita green area from 1.7 square metres to 28 square metres, or 16 times what it is presently. The programme also aims to improve Riyadh's urban environment by planting trees in residential areas. It also helps to achieve one of the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which is to plant 10 billion trees in Saudi Arabia over the next several decades.
