RIYADH: Thousands of people gathered at the Japan Festival recently held in Riyadh, drawing businesspeople, matcha tea enthusiasts, anime lovers, and car aficionados. Co-organized by the Embassy of Japan, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the Japanese Society in Riyadh, the festival took place at the Cultural Palace in Saudi Arabia's capital and attracted approximately 8,000 attendees over two days.
“For Japan, Saudi Arabia remains one of the most significant trade partners for two main reasons. Firstly, Saudi Arabia is Japan's largest crude oil supplier. Secondly, Saudi Arabia holds Japanese technologies, especially in transportation equipment, in high regard,” a spokesperson stated. Highlighting Japan-Saudi exports, JETRO noted that Japanese exports to Saudi Arabia reached $6.36 billion in 2023, marking a 25.2 percent increase from the previous year.
The event showcased major automotive brands such as Mitsubishi and Toyota, alongside a variety of technology, beauty, art, and recreational companies. Renowned participants included Itochu, a prominent trading house, and Kumon, an educational network for children.
Stage performances celebrated Japanese culture with acts like a drum performance by students from the Japanese School in Riyadh, martial arts demonstrations, tea ceremonies, umbrella juggling, live painting, and renditions of traditional and anime songs. Attendees engaged in Japanese tourism insights, traditional toy activities, origami lessons, and the opportunity to wear a kimono or yukata.
The booth area featured cutting-edge Japanese industrial products and cars from leading brands. Visitors also participated in workshops on calligraphy and crafts, immersing themselves in the unique artistry and traditions of Japan.
