The Madinah Award for Environment was established by Governor Prince Faisal bin Salman to promote conservation. Under the theme "the environment is for us and for our generations," 23 business, governmental, and municipal organisations will compete for the prize in its inaugural year.
Seven categories make up the award: reducing desertification and increasing plant cover, using plastic alternatives, creating environmental awareness campaigns, research and innovation in recycling, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting the marine environment.
The new award, according to Mohammed bin Ibrahim Abbas, the secretary general of the Madinah Award Foundation, is "an opportunity to recognise the efforts made by different sectors, to promote awareness of the importance of protecting Madinah's environment and to contribute to building a better future for our future generations."
Majid Al-Bijawi, CEO of the Foundation, stated that in order to finalise the judging standards, award organisers looked at dozens of other comparable programmes and organised workshops. He continued by saying that the winners will be announced during a ceremony.
