Premiere of first grand Saudi opera, “Zarqa Al Yamama,” set for April 25 at the King Fahd Cultural Center

The first major Saudi opera, "Zarqa Al Yamama," will have its world premiere on April 25 at the King Fahd Cultural Center, according to a statement from the Theater and Performing Arts Commission. The Minister of Culture, Prince Badr Bin Abdullah Bin Farhan, is in favor of this historic occasion, which represents a critical turning point in Saudi Arabian culture.

This opera, which is performed entirely in Arabic, is unusual in the largely European-language-dominated operatic genre. It combines aspects of traditional Saudi music with well-known operatic works as inspiration for musical sections and famous spoken lyrics.

The narrative of "Zarqa Al Yamama" is based on a pre-Islamic heroine from the Al-Yamama district of Najd.

With a blend of orchestral pieces and choral performances, the story revolves around a tragic tribal battle and promises to be both culturally complex and emotionally compelling.

The libretto for the opera was written by the well-known Saudi poet Saleh Zamanan, who has won accolades for both his plays and poetry. He has blended his distinct literary style into the historical narrative.

The production honors a substantial portion of Saudi tradition while attempting to connect with contemporary artistic trends and public ambitions.

Ten performances spread over eight days will be available for this production, which is the fruit of a partnership between Saudi and foreign performers, from April 25 to May 4.
