UN Secretary-General António Guterres has confirmed Saudi Arabia's admission to the UN Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is a significant step. The advisory group's 39 members, who come from a variety of backgrounds including academia, business, civil society, and government, are there to offer advice and views on issues about artificial intelligence. The Shoura Council Member Dr. Latifa bint Mohammad Al-Abdulkareem has been selected to represent the Kingdom on this significant stage.
The high-level Advisory body's members come from a variety of backgrounds, representing a range of gender, age, and geographic viewpoints, as Secretary-General Guterres said. The decision was made following Saudi Arabia's hosting of a consultation meeting by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) during the 2022 Global Artificial Intelligence Summit. The creation of the UN Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence was the main topic of discussion at this conference.
The establishment of the advisory council was proposed in 2020 as a component of the UN Secretary-General's agenda for digital cooperation. The group aims to reflect the worldwide effort to handle the complexity of this fast evolving technology by conducting in-depth investigation and offering suggestions for the international regulation of AI.
