Saudi Arabia's Red Sea Global has announced the inauguration of a first nursery specialized in mangrove saplings

Red Sea Global (RSG) of Saudi Arabia has announced the opening of its first nursery specialising in mangrove seedlings, with the goal of planting more than 50 million trees by 2030. According to the RSG, the mangrove nursery was established in collaboration with the National Centre for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC).

The nursery's mission is to expand the number of mangrove forests and improve biodiversity, which will help achieve the ambitious environmental goals, according to Pagano. The mangrove seedlings will be cared for for 8 months until their length reaches 80cm, at which point they will be placed in specific mangrove gardens located across the RSG's locations. The local mangrove trees were picked by the RSG specialist to maximise the possibilities of success in growing other trees of the same kind, such as grey and red mangroves.

Raed Al-Baseet, RSG's Head of habitat and Sustainability, stated that creating a healthy habitat for mangrove trees is an important aspect of the RSG's commitment to maintaining the natural environment for their destinations.

Mangrove trees are notable for their ability to absorb carbon 5 to 10 times more effectively than other plants, as well as their good impact on environmental diversity. The RSG adopts the maximum degree of protection for nurseries to minimise seedling deterioration, since they are created in carefully selected places that are sheltered from natural dangers like as storms, excessive tides, animal free grazing, and others.

Mangrove seedlings will be planted throughout RSG's destinations, where mangrove gardens will be designated to be part of the experiences of visitors and guests, who will be able to visit and explore the gardens, as well as learn more about the important role that these unique plants play in the natural ecosystem within the Red Sea region.

Tariq Al-Abbasi, Director of the Environmental Programmes Department at RSG, stated that the process of planting and growing mangrove trees would be carried out using sophisticated technical abilities, as well as a great strategy and mastery.

The newest RSG effort, the development of a mangrove nursery, aims to conserve and improve crucial biodiversity areas. Previous RSG efforts included the first successful transplant of doum palms (known as Hyphaene) and acacia trees in early 2023, as well as the development of floating coral nurseries to help increase the number of coral reefs in the area.

RSG performs frequent environmental assessments of animal ecosystems in order to monitor and track environmental effects and improvements in order to enhance its approach and ensure the attainment of renewable targets. The RSG recently published a research on wildlife and the ecosystem that was based on the findings of the largest-ever environmental assessment done by a real estate developer in 2022. The survey covers 250 square kilometres of Red Sea shoreline and particular sites around the Amaala resort.
