NewsTo inspect the food served to worshippers and pilgrims during Ramadan, Saudi municipal officials in Mecca are running mobile labs close to the Grand Mosque, considered the holiest site in Islam.
The municipality's Food Safety department has facilities where food and meals given to worshippers to break their fast at dusk each day during Ramadan are tested.
The municipality stated that the action seeks to routinely analyse samples at the site and confirm the suitability of the food.
The service is a component of an integrated system running continuously at the holy site during Ramadan, which is typically Saudi Arabia's busiest time for Umrah or lesser pilgrimage.
The General Presidency for Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, had claimed earlier this month that it started a plan at the Grand Mosque for evaluating dates that worshippers consume to break the daylong fast during Ramadan.
