News EventThe "Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet" exhibition, which highlights pivotal milestones in the development of Islam, debuted this week at the National Museum in Riyadh. The exhibit depicts the Prophet Muhammad's forced migration from Makkah to Madinah in order to flee persecution for his religious beliefs.
The King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture and the National Museum collaborated to arrange the show, which featured more than 70 scholars and artists as well as technical teams with specialised knowledge. After six months, it will leave the National Museum in Riyadh and go first to Madinah, then to other places all over the world. With 14 interactive stations, eight parts for each of the eight days of the journey, and immersive audio-visual installations and films, the museum tells the story of the Prophet Muhammad's travels.
Through a variety of artefacts, it examines the pre-Islamic material cultures of Makkah and Madinah. New commissions from artists and artisans throughout the world complete the exhibition. Atiq Al-Biladi and Abdullah Alkadi's extensive fieldwork and research form the foundation of the show.
Both academics are world-renowned experts on the Hijrah, and Alkadi followed the Prophet Muhammad's precise journey from Makkah to Madinah over the desert, crossing through the stony Hijaz mountains in the Kingdom, to present a thorough account of the event. Interactive seminars, workshops, and activities are also included in the exhibition for visitors of all ages.
