Tuesday marked the start of the 44th session of the Executive Council of the Islamic World Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organisation (ICESCO) in Jeddah. The summit was organised by the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science (SNCECS) and was attended by delegates from 54 member states, as well as the governor of Jeddah, Prince Saud Bin Jalawi, as well as a number of ambassadors and ministers.
SNCECS Secretary-General Ahmed Al-Bulaihad gave the opening address at the event. He underlined Jeddah's importance because of its historical, Islamic, and archaeological landmarks as well as its vital role as a major Islamic and commercial hub on the Red Sea coast, especially for pilgrim traffic.
An exhibit titled "Caravans" featured pictures that depicted the historic trade, pilgrimage, and civilization routes that came together in the Arabic Peninsula. This presentation showed the several pilgrimage routes from the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Iraq, Asia, and Africa. It was divided into five panels, with the last panel bearing the title "The Whole World, The World Together."
The delegates also visited Jeddah, which is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and as a Heritage Site in the Islamic World by ICESCO.
The rich historical and cultural legacy of the city was shown during this tour.
