News EventThe Year of Arabic Poetry 2023 initiative's events included the opening of the "Mu'allaqa 45" televised Arabic poetry competition on Saturday by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission. A famous group of poets from Saudi Arabia and the Arab world will be included in it, which will be shown on the Saudi Thaqafiya Channel. The effort aims to resuscitate the Arabian Peninsula's "Mu'allaqat" (Arabic for "hanging poems") poetic tradition, which was essential in forming the region's literary history.
The competition, which will be conducted yearly, will have 36 poets competing to write a timeless poem each year. Throughout cultural celebrations, the best poetry will be displayed in various Riyadh sites. Metered verse, folk poetry, and free verse are the three primary categories for the competition. The top three winners will receive monetary awards.
The first-place winner will also get SR1 million ($266,600), in addition to having their poetry publicly exhibited in the Saudi capital. The second- and third-place winners will each get SR500,000 and SR250,000, respectively. A monetary award of SR50,000 will be given to each competitor who is selected to take part in the tournament. Additionally, they will be given a special invitation to the annual poets' banquet held in celebration of Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the minister of culture.
