NewsThe acceptance of the registration and documentation of 59 additional archaeological sites in the National Register of Antiquities was made public by the Saudi Heritage Commission on Tuesday. With these additions, the total number of sites throughout the Kingdom that are included in the National Register of Antiquities is 8,847. The historical richness of Saudi Arabia is reflected in these landmarks, which form a national legacy.
According to the commission, the region in the north of Tabuk has the greatest number of these sites—22—followed by the Al-Jouf region (14), Jazan (6), Hail (5), Asir and Madinah regions (4 each), Makkah (3), and one site in the Qassim region.
The commission's board of directors decided to allow the CEO to approve new registrations of archaeological and heritage sites in the National Antiquities Register, and as a result, the commission's CEO is now able to register archaeological sites under the Antiquities, Museums and Urban Heritage Law, which was issued by a royal decree dated 9/1/1436. This falls under the commission's overall purpose to locate historical and archaeological sites in Saudi Arabia and formally register them with the National Register of Antiquities.
To simplify their protection, preservation, and administration, the sites are included in a computerised map after being registered in the National Register. The commission intends to archive the records and images of historic sites in the Kingdom in addition to recording the work being done on the sites by creating a database of registered archaeological sites.
In order for the Heritage Commission to access and register newly discovered archaeological sites through the Balagh platform (https://contactcenter.moc.gov.sa), its official account on the social media platform X, and its branches located throughout the Kingdom, the commission called on interested parties and citizens to report any discoveries of archaeological sites. It honoured the citizen's awareness of and contribution to the development and preservation of his nation's legacy.
