First UN-recognized International Day for the Arabian Leopard; Saudi Arabia has been instrumental in advocating for the conservation of the Arabian Leopard

The inaugural International Day for the Arabian Leopard, recognised by the UN, is observed on Saturday, marking a significant turning point in the history of wildlife conservation as it brings attention to the vital work being done to keep one of the most vulnerable big cat species from becoming extinct. Saudi Arabia is at the centre of these efforts, having played a key role in promoting the preservation of the Arabian Leopard and leading campaigns that have now gained prominence on a global scale.

The loss of habitat, poaching, and confrontation with people have posed serious challenges to the Arabian Leopard, which is recognised for its unique coat and elusive character. The species is in danger of going extinct, with less than 200 individuals thought to remain in the wild. Saudi Arabia has taken the lead in the protection of these magnificent animals by establishing the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), which has been in the forefront of initiatives to save and restore the Arabian Leopard population, after realising the urgent need for action.

The specific goal of the RCU's Arabian Leopard Programme is to return the species into its native AlUla area, in addition to ensuring its survival. Breeding programmes, scientific studies, community involvement, and habitat restoration initiatives are all part of an all-encompassing conservation approach. The development of a breeding centre in Taif, which has already witnessed the birth of fresh leopard pups, signalling optimism for the species' future, has been one of the program's significant triumphs.

As part of the inaugural International Day for the Arabian Leopard, Saudi Arabia is launching a number of initiatives around the Kingdom aimed at drawing attention to the species' predicament and rallying support for its protection. These activities, which emphasise the value of biodiversity and the interdependence of all living things, include bringing attention to the problem of the Arabian leopard and holding public catwalks in significant locations.

The fact that this day is observed also demonstrates Saudi Arabia's dedication to international environmental and animal protection. With everyone uniting to commemorate this momentous day, the focus on the Arabian Leopard serves as a sad reminder of the difficulties confronting the species of our globe and the pressing need for coordinated conservation efforts.
