With a total length of 176 km, Riyadh Metro is expected to be the longest driverless metro line in the world. This launch, which comes 12 years after the project was first announced, represents a major turning point in the development of public transportation in the Saudi capital.
According to Al Eqtisadiah, the project's first phase will involve operations on three main lines: King Khalid International Airport Road, Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street to Batha, and the intersection of Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street and Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street.
The network's operational capacity will be further increased when the lines along King Abdullah Road, Al Madina, and King Abdulaziz Road open in the middle of next month.
After Makkah, it is the second metro line in Saudi Arabia. However, the Riyadh Metro line will run all year round, in contrast to Makkah's seven-day-a-year operation.
Three lines will be operational during the first phase, with the remaining three lines expected to launch in the middle of December.
Regenerative braking technology, energy-efficient trains, and the utilization of renewable energy from solar panels placed at different stations are just a few of the sustainable elements that the metro system has, according to Al Eqtisadiah.
